More on Brandy
1995 and 1996 were phenomenal years for Brandy. Having been nominated tw
ice for the 1996 Grammy awards as “Best New Artist” and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance” for the smash hit “Baby”.
She also won a total of seven Soul Train Music Awards including the Aretha Franklin Award for Entertainer of the Year at the 2nd annual Lady of Soul Awards in 1996.
She also brought home the “Best International New Artist” award at the 1996 Japan Music Awards.
Brandy released her 2nd album in 1998 entitled “Never Say Never”. It contained the track “The Boy is Mine”, a duet with singer Monica, which managed to stay on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks. It earned Brandy a nomination for the American Music Award, and four Grammy awards, eventually taking home the “Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group”. The second single from the album, “Top of The World” became the #3 most played song on American Radio. “Have You Ever”, the third single to be released became the first #1 single of 1999. She released her third album “Full Moon” in March of 2002 and spawned hits including “What About Us”, while her fourth album “Afrodisiac was released in 2004, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Album charts.
Brandy starred in the popular TV sitcom “Moesha” (1996-2001) playing the role of a high school student. She also did some movies including “Arachnophobia” (1990) and the sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” (1998) where she played Karla, best friend to Jennifer Love Hewitt’s lead character. In 2001, Brandy supposedly “married” record producer Robert Smith and had a daughter, Sy’rai Iman Smith. Shortly after the child was born, the couple parted ways. Later, it was exposed that the “marriage” was not of legal status and was made up as an attempt to keep Brandy’s “wholesome” image rather than her be known as a single mother. Quentin Richardson of the New York Knicks proposed to Brandy in July 2004 at a private reception in Los Angeles, but later broke up in late 2005.
